Hollow fibre membranes made from weft-insertion fabrics consist of semi-permeable fibres through which water can be filtered either from the outside to the inside or from the inside to the outside. Depending on the direction of flow, particles remain either on the outside or inside of the fibres. Depending on the pore size, a distinction is made between microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, whereby smaller particles ranging from gases to salts are retained.
